Word comes from Maine's Burnt Island Lighthouse about a wonderful new children’s book called "Percival the Lighthouse Mouse", written and illustrated by Burnt Island volunteer and author/illustrator, Bob McKay.
The setting for the story is of course, Burnt Island. The book contains a vocabulary section to help readers understand the terms associated with lighthouses.

Almost all children's lighthouse books are charming and Bob McKay's new book "Percival The Lighthouse Mouse" is no exception. But what sets this book apart is that it is instructive as well as charming. Illustrated with bold colorful drawings, the story features Percival a mouse that wishes to be a lighthouse keeper. He daily follows the keeper on his rounds, learning the trade of running a lighthouse. His friends chide him, but Percival never relents or abandons his dream of becoming a keeper.
One dark and stormy night the light fails as the keeper sleeps on. Percival, noting the dark lantern room from his window, races to the keeper’s bedroom and manages to wake him by knocking the alarm clock on to the floor. The keeper recognizing the discrepancy rushes to the lantern room and corrects the situation. His action, thanks to Percival, is just in time to warn a sailing vessel from crashing on to the rocks of the island. Due to his actions Percival realizes his dream and becomes an assistant keeper.
This charming story is based on a real light station, Burnt Island Lighthouse in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. It also provides real information regarding the workings of the lens and fog signal machinery. The book contains a useful glossary, a simple map of the area (with interesting questions for children readers) and a short history of Burnt Island Light Station.
If you know of a small person that you would like to interest in the fascinating history of lighthouses, this is the perfect book to start him or her off on the lighthouse trail.
